Experimentation - Light

As part of my experimentation work, I printed off one of my images from my 'Knuckle Puck' shoot, and I pierced holes through the paper the image was printed on. And then, using Light and a Drying Rack, I created this abstract grid style image to enhance my photograph and make it slightly more interesting. I especially like how the Light has came through the holes, resulting in them looking quite illuminated, and contrasting against the darker parts of the image, and the shadows of the Drying Rack.

Here are the contact sheets that I collated using the images from the two times I experimented with this technique in the dark room. The first time, I did not use the sticky tape to hold my image up against the light, I simply held it with the light shining through and I took the pictures that way. It wasn't until I did it again that we came up with the idea to have the image suspending from tape.

To get the best out of this technique, I had to improvise with my equipment. I did try simply holding the image and light up near the camera, however this was inconsistent and unclear at times; so I had to think outside the box slightly. I came up with the idea to use sticky tape and a tripod, and my friend Catherine held the phone light up against the image. With this experimentation, I believe that it will take practice to near enough perfect it, and I am happy with the first outcome of me trying this out, as it was a very last minute and improvised choice to make.

Here is the image I selected from my Knuckle Puck shoot to use. I picked out this image due to the fact I initially selected it as one of my personal strongest from the shoot, plus I really like how there are a variety of colours and tones present in the image. I also like how I captured Joe (the front man of Knuckle Puck) looking very focused; as this was taken moments before their set begun, and you can see the band and crew setting up the instruments and stage behind Joe.

An example of the effect I acheived when placing Light and my image on a Drying Rack. As you can see, the Light has resulted in a grid style pattern on the image, and I was very happy with how this turned out. I find it very abstract, quite unique and unusual.

As well as using the drying rack and phone flashes for an abstract effect, I also tried to project the shapes created from the pierced holes onto a blank wall. In order for this to work, I had to turn the lights off in the darkroom so the light would contrast against the dark wall, and make the shapes stand out more. I did have some issues with my camera taking the images (with it being very dark) however I like the effect that this technique created, and it is definitely something I would consider working on for more experiementation work and potentially involve it in my final creations.
